Polling the Delegates – Part Five: Meet Mr. Morris!

“Mr. Secretary, New York abstains… courteously.” – from practically every vote in 1776. Fortunately, New York did not abstain from our Congressional Q&A.

Meet our Mr. Lewis Morris – Beatriz Esteban-Messina!

Tell us about yourself. We have precious little information…”
I taught drama, music and art in a private Catholic high school for 33 years. For the last 10 of those I was also the principal. Indeed, an unusual combination of head administrator and arts instructor!

Since my retirement in 2011, I have been living my dream of working full-time in all aspects of theatre.
I am presently directing my 65th and 66th plays (‘NIGHT MOTHER for Fearless productions and SEUSSIFED CHRISTMAS CAROL for Studio Players) simultaneously.

Equally comfortable both on & off the stage, I have played over 50 roles in both musical and dramatic theatre. I am very proud of my 2 NJACT Perry Award Nominations. Most recently, I was in the amazing cast of RAGTIME with 4th Wall Productions, and now, thanks to Laura, I get to play a Founding Father. Always thankful for my husband, Jim, who encourages my stage mania.

How familiar were you with 1776 before joining this cast?

This has been my #1 favorite of the “classic” musicals since I first saw it performed by a very good church group in early 80’s.

How much (or little) do you know about your colony/state?
I grew up in the Bronx (1956-1965) and our social studies curriculum mainly taught about the state of NY and NYC. So, I actually knew quite a bit although I am a bit rusty at this point.

As your colony’s stance on the question of Independency is well known… let us instead pose another, highly divisive question: Pumpkin Spice- Yea or Nay?
I don’t like the flavor nor aroma of anything pumpkin with the exception of pumpkin soup.
